We'll now be running our annual end-of-season Big Park Tidy on Saturday 6 December. This replaces the session originally planned for 2 November. Usual arrangements: wear old clothes and sensible footwear. Brooms, shovels etc can be provided - but if you can bring your own, better still!

We should be in full swing from around 10.30 'til the job is finished. Just turn up.... see the home page for details about any possible last-minute change due to inclement weather. Refreshments available as usual.

Our next public meeting will be at the usual location of the Scout Hut, Brickfield Road SO17 3AE, at 7.45pm, complete with mulled wine and mince pies. See the agenda here.

Summer summary - Nature Kids sessions

Our events co-ordinator Tony Ridley looks back on the recently-finished series:

"This summer, on the first Saturday of June, July and August, we have held a 2 hour Kids session, to encourage kids to think more about the different forms of nature to be found on the Rec. By making available craft activities, a nature trail / quiz and various colouring options, the kids have painted pebbles, decorated plant pots, done leaf rubbings and taken part in bug hunts, bird spotting and looking for 9 different varieties of trees to be found around the Rec.

At our August gathering, there was even the opportunity to build some Hoverfly lagoons, which were then taken across to be placed around the garden by the gardening group. The kids have joined in, often before or after a visit to the playground, enjoying the choice of different activities. And their accompanying adults have also got involved, be it encouraging their children, taking part in the trails, helping to answer the questions or just chatting amongst themselves. All in all, the sessions have added an extra level of excitement to their visit to the Rec.

We are looking to run similar types of Kids activities next year, assuming we can get enough volunteers to help run them. If you would be willing to help please either at a session or in the preparation, please get in touch via info.friendsofportswoodrec@gmail.com. Thank you!"
