08 Mar 25 - Two community events in Bitterne

 

Chessel Bay Local Nature Reserve is on the eastern bank of the river Itchen, south of Northam Bridge. It's the only remaining long stretch of undeveloped, natural shoreline, with mudflats providing  feeding grounds for wading birds and wildfowl.  Litter is a major environmental problem, mainly brought in by the tides, and Chessel Bay's Friends now organise a twice-yearly litterpick. Info about the next session is on the poster, with more on the website.

 

And if you're crossing the river to Bitterne by train on Saturday, you'll certainly come face-to-face with the seed-swappers.  Southampton Seed Swap is just what it says on the packet.  Barter  your surplus seeds, trade some gardening tips, and have a cuppa courtesy of the Art House Community Pantry.,  More details on the poster

 

 

 

11 Jan 25 - Common Conservation Volunteers

 

 Ranger-led conservation tasks around the common, Saturdays between 10am - 2pm :

  • 7 December 2024
  • 11 January 2025
  • 8 February 2025
  • 8 March 2025

 

Please email hawthorn@southampton.gov.uk to register your interest and for more information about the task.  Deadline for registration is the Wednesday before each event.  All are free and tools are provided.

 

PS The Ranger team are hoping to set up a Junior Rangers team based at the Common in 2025, for people aged 16-23. More details in due course on SCC social media and website.
